In early 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X) will launch the Interconnection Cost Reduction Solutions (iCRS) program with opportunities to address both the distribution-level (iCRS-D) and transmission-level (iCRS-T) interconnection challenges. The mission of i2X is to enable simple, fast, and affordable interconnection while enhancing the reliability and security of the electric grid. In the face of rapidly rising energy needs, i2X works to maximize the use of Federal resources such that state and local governments, utilities, grid operators, grid customers, and other stakeholders address interconnection constraints to efficiently meet new demand in an affordable, reliable, and secure manner.
Through iCRS-D, i2X will fund local, state, or regional partnerships to execute a Lighthouse Project–a pilot program which develops and demonstrates new technologies and effective solutions–to increase data access and transparency, streamline and expedite interconnection services, and maximize economic efficiency. Lead organizations, with their partners, will apply their distribution-level interconnection expertise to prioritize and adapt practical solutions for load and generation interconnection. These efforts will deliver tested approaches to scalable interconnection innovations that improve processes, reduce overall costs, and maintain a reliable grid.
ENERGYWERX is compiling a Teaming Partner List to facilitate the formation of project teams for this solicitation. The Teaming Partner List allows entities that may wish to participate on a project to express their interest to other applicants and explore potential partnerships.
iCRS-T will feature two solicitations and facilitate matchmaking between U.S. transmission providers (Voucher Recipients) and U.S.-based organizations with specialized expertise in advanced electric system modeling capabilities and interconnection studies (Voucher Providers). Voucher Recipients seeking to include cost reducing technologies and techniques (such as grid-enhancing technologies and control options within power electronic devices) in their interconnection studies to reliably integrate power-electronics-interfaced large loads, generation resources, and storage devices will be matched with experienced Voucher Providers with these capabilities. The program will also increase in-house expertise with training in electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling. The goal of iCRS-T is to improve affordability and strengthen grid reliability by enhancing technical capabilities of U.S. bulk power system transmission owners and operators.
